Re: Whale songs (what are you listening to?)
Sat, September 29, 2007 - 6:45 AMJust returned from a long roadtrip and had my CD player playing: James Brown and his band, Patti Smith's new "Twelve," Mozart, Putomayo's "Gypsy Groove," "Turn my Teeth up!" by Baby Elephant, Toots & the Maytels' "True Love," a friend's homemade techno, my own Jazz picks, and Gogol Bordello's "Super Taranta."
But my favorite music was playing my recorder (improvising) on the beach by the fire as the sun set........

Sat, September 29, 2007 - 7:05 AMIt's been winter here and we've enjoyed a glass of red wine by the fire each night. And each night the sounds of Beirut have set the mood. Strangely melancholic music but uplifting at the same time...

Re: Whale songs (what are you listening to?)
Sat, September 29, 2007 - 12:07 PMPart of the reason I'm so obsessed with music is that I come from a family of 5 (i'm #4) and I was exposed to all kinds of music when I was young. My oldest bro was into Rock and Blues, second oldest and older sis were into R&B and Soul/Funk. Youngest sis was into Modern/Alternative music. My aunt and uncle that I spent a lot of time with were into Motown, and he was in a band called The Suckers. They both used to sing duets together in perfect harmony.
My cousin is a rapper/hip hop guy touring the world ATM.
Recording is my life! I'm never happier than when I'm playing my guitar and singing my ass off. I'm just about to sing this song in honor of my fishy friends:

Re: Whale songs (what are you listening to?)
Sun, September 30, 2007 - 9:33 PMRight now I am listening to "Into the Wild" soundtrack over and over (and over, especially track 7 "Hard Sun"). Sean Penn asked Eddie Vedder to do it, and it feels inspired. I downloaded it from iTunes and it had 4 bonus tracks. *grins widely* Otherwise, I have been on a recent quest to have each of my close friends give me their top 20 (or what fits onto an 80 minute music CD) to get to know them on a different level and find new music outside of my own scope. 2 friends have turned theirs in so far, and I have to say it is very interesting. -

Re: Whale songs (what are you listening to?)
Wed, October 10, 2007 - 8:16 AMI had the rare pleasure of opening a show for John Lee Hooker when he performed at the Route 66 in Burlingame back in the 90s. We got to hang out with him at the bar for a little while, and I couldn't understand a single word he said! He has a voice like sandpaper and it was a noisy bar.
He sat on a stool and played his guitar that night. I was floored by his stage presence. Tons of blue smoke and soul in that voice of his.

Re: Whale songs (what are you listening to?)
Tue, October 9, 2007 - 4:08 PMI have recently become obsessed with the "Across the Universe" soundtrack. Yes, I am serious. I'm also really falling in love with psytrance as a genre. After coming back from a weekend of dancing for hours at a time to house and psytrance, I feel the seratonin already starting to fall off....help! -

Got a few delay settings in my Logic setup that make guitar pick scrapes on the strings sound like whale calls.
Some serious "whaling" on the guitar.

Oh man, Blues is fish food. Pure undiluted emotion if you play it right.
"Blues isn't about making yourself feel better, it's about making everyone else feel worse"
The whole one man and his guitar against the world thing really appeals to me.

Re: Whale songs (what are you listening to?)
Sat, October 20, 2007 - 9:30 AMI loved checking out some of the music you offered. My taste as of late most often has to do with my toddler. I have forgotten about my own taste. Most of what I like would go with the bodywork I do, like Deva Premal, whale, water sounds. I will love the Beatles forever! Swing, big band, cultural, Putumayo, The Gypsy Kings. My oldest brother must have played Yellow Submarine when was born for I wondered why it always rang in my head all my life. He was an early teen when I was a toddler so I am sure hippie music of the late 60's had its way with my nervous system. I was raised in Motown. Thank God I have rhythm!!! I was a love child born at the beginning of the X generation from parents who were born around the depression if that tells you anything!!! -

Re: Whale songs (what are you listening to?)
Fri, September 12, 2008 - 7:35 AMLove in Vain is a cover of an old Robert Johnson blues song. Hard to get more earthy than RJ, he was possessed by the devil to get his chops according to popular lore and his other song Crossroads.
I've always dug this song by The Stones featuring Brian Jones (Pisces Sun) playing the vibraphone:

Re: Whale songs (what are you listening to?)
Fri, September 12, 2008 - 9:48 AMI didn't know Love in Vain was a Ronbert Johnson song..though I knew the stones play quite a few covers and never asume they're all there own compositions. I need to read up on M.r Robert Johnson, I think.
Speaking of great Stones songs..this is one of my favorites..

Learned a lot of lessons with this shoot. Here's a break down of what I learned:
1. ALWAYS check the camera sound using headphones BEFORE you record anything.
2. Fixing things in the mix SUCKS. Pre-production FTW!
3. I should never ever try mixing sound when I have the flu, both my ears feel like I have carrots stuck deep in them.
4. The Ripple filter in Final Cut Pro is pretty damn cool
Enjoy! -

Re: Whale songs (what are you listening to?)
Mon, February 2, 2009 - 11:34 AMMmmmmmm.....very sensuous and trance-y. I love it. Reminds me of Hendrix/Santanta/Beck on a deep sea dive.....letting go.......into the ocean of Being...........becoming cosmic dust and then re-arranging the self like a kaleidescope an then coming back home. The whalesong travels around the Earth and beyond...........and back again to the ocean, our cosmic home....of life.
Um, I love it!
